BACKSTORY I grew up in a house that overlooked fields and woods. As a student I would paint pictures of trees in gloss paint in the open air. I enjoyed the recent Hockney tree paintings. Towards the end of winter in 2012 I took a number of landscape photos whilst walking on Exmoor. In the midst of the Frieze Art Fair that year I had the idea to make a series of paintings combining these landscapes with images from the internet. THE PAINTINGS In order to search for an image to combine with a particular landscape, the camera jpeg number of that landscape was entered into Google Images. From the resulting group of images – all with the same jpeg number - a single image was chosen. Landscape and image were then combined on the computer. THE TITLE The title for the show started as ‘Late Winter Trees’ before turning into ‘Late Winter Internet’ and finally becoming ‘They May Now Know Everything But We Will Win’. This title was prompted by my anxiety at the dual events of (a) Apple acquiring my hard drive under the guise of a product recall, together with (b) the ongoing surveillance revelations – in particular the confirmation of collusion between technology corporations and the security services.
